Orchard House
Project Description
Set amidst a dense grid of mature mango trees, this residence harmonizes with its natural surroundings while establishing a distinct architectural rhythm. Positioned in the southwest corner of the acre-sized property, the home adheres to Vastu principles while preserving the orchard as a permanent green expanse. The seemingly organic arrangement of mango trees dictates the placement of interconnected open courts, which serve as vessels for nature, blurring the lines between built and unbuilt spaces. The northern façade is intentionally eroded, replaced by a tartan grid of three courtyards—an arrival court, a treed courtyard, and a pool court—spatially defined by rough Kurnoor grey sandstone walls that echo the dark sinuous trunks.
These monochromatic walls extend the built experience while obscuring the scale of the house, creating a sequence of thresholds. A narrow labyrinth-like aisle between the stone walls offers glimpses of the pool and courtyard, leading visitors to an intimate entry portico. Inside, a colonnaded gallery links the drawing and family rooms, while private spaces, including two bedroom suites, are nestled in the western block. A linear staircase ascends a double-height space, landing at the upper family lounge with expansive views of the tree canopy. North-facing bedrooms extend into the landscape through animated terraces screened by pivoted wooden louvers. A restrained palette of steel, timber, glass, and stone grounds the home within its orchard setting, ensuring a seamless dialogue between architecture and nature.
