Project Description
Tropical Tranquility is a three-storey residence designed with a striking combination of wood and concrete, creating a dynamic interplay of materials and forms. The bold concrete volumes are softened by the warmth of wooden eaves, exterior paneling, and uniquely designed sun shading elements. The facade’s two fronts exhibit a fascinating contrast, with individual volumes that are unified through the recurring brise soleil, a design feature inspired by the sibi—a traditional element of the Filipino bahay kubo. The sibi, an extension of the roof over a window, serves as essential weatherproofing in tropical climates, providing protection from rain and intense sunlight.
The house’s layout is thoughtfully designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, particularly considering its north and east-facing orientation. The major living and dining areas are positioned to take advantage of the morning sun, with the garden and lanai situated along the northeast. The fenestration is strategically designed to allow ample sunlight and airflow, while the sibi-patterned brise soleil provides shading during the day. This feature continues to the second floor, protecting the bedrooms from heat while offering unobstructed views of the surroundings. With a simple yet efficient layout, the residence ensures privacy without compromising on the scenic vistas, creating a comfortable and harmonious living environment.
